Gents,

I have the delta 31-255X Drum sander. I have really enjoyed this sander.
Never a problem. Always ran smooth, and performed well. Friday I'm
thicknessing some tops and backs when the conveyer starts chugging
and skipping. So I took off the feed motor, cracked open the gear
housing off the motor and found it had one nylon gear inside that the top
part of the gears (it has two levels...top one is driect drive off the motor,
and the lower transfers that to another larger gear) Teeth had been worn
down, thus causing the skipping. I called Delta to get a replacement
gear, and come to find out they will only sell the entire motor and
housing and not the gear itself. So to get a two dollar part I have to shell
out $160.

My question is..is there anyplace that makes/sells gears that I could find a
replacement? I checked McMaster but didn't see the style of gear I need.
If you know of a place that would rock. If not then I'll just suck it up and
pay the $160, but that sucks when you only need one small part...of
course I guess I'd have a replacement motor if it ever fails in the future,
but I'd rather spend the $150 extra on some wood or something like that!

Your not having much luck with gears

I have a man this side of tha atlantic who could probably get one if you are stuck, Do you have a pic ?

no of teeth shaft diameter etc.

Try John Hall or Michael Payne they might know someone.

I don't know those dimensions/numbers. I'll count them and get a pic
tomorrow...or this evening if I get a chance to go down to my shop (it's
15 miles away and my motorcycle is broken...skipped a tooth on a
camshaft gear! darn gears is right!)

If you're any good at CAD, and know the relevant dimensions etc, you could go here and have one made up.

Check your local Yellow Pages listings for "Electric Motors", and "Electric Motors-Repairing". Get all the make, model, numbers off the motor, and make some phone calls. Maybe you find a shop that will fix it for you.

John, have you tried calling Steve's Tools in OKC? The one on 25th and Walker has a repair shop for most of the tools they sell. They might be able to get you a gear from Delta. Sometimes dealers have the inside track, if you know what I mean.

John, just take the part to a local machine shop and ask them to make a new one. Get a quote first just in case. It won't be a buck twenty five but it would probably be less than $160. Also, do you have a bearing supplier near by? Sometimes they can find a replacement for this stuff.

I just did the same thing with my Ryobi sander. I ended up buying the motor/gearbox for about $150, it was either that or a new sander but that was way more $$. I am thinking about using the old motor to drive a sharpening turntable but I have to come up with another sort of speed reduction. Stay tuned for update.
